I’ve been around Bear River since childhood. My mother grew up in Bear River East and, as a teenager, she was employed by local families. As a result, we often visited Bear River for Sunday afternoon tea and long conversations. The exhibitions and carnivals were part of our yearly celebrations.
Sixty years on, I still pass through the village en route to visit our daughter who is bringing up her family in Clementsvale. Along the way, a wee jolt of coffee provides a bit of energy to get on with our projects. And there it is: SISSIBOO Cafe with its sumptuously brewed treats, and there he is: Jon Welch.For me, Jon and his family represent the best kind of rural renewal and development: local production, local employment, excellent quality, and all done to scale with the kind of energy that bodes well for this resilient village. It is reassuring to know Jon is offering that good energy to local government. Jon uses his resources to make business in the area grow, to make culture flourish, and along the way everyone benefits. I wish him well in his bid to sit on the local council.

“Jon Welch is the real deal.
For years he has used his personal time, energy and skills to make Bear River a better place to live. I couldn’t begin to list his volunteer roles but I can tell you that one of them was a persistent lobbying to pipe water into downtown Bear River. He orchestrated a sit-down meeting 2 Premiers ago to patiently explain that Bear River still had no public water system. Much was promised, but it would still take multiple years, many governmental changes and a dogged determination to get the results.
As I write, there are finally crews installing water lines through the downtown and up to our community centre.
We need Jon Welch and more like him in government!”
